St. Mary's Cathedral

St. Mary’s Cathedral

The Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky region is also home to one of the most beautiful churches in the United States, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. It is designated as a minor basilica and is the cathedral of the Diocese of Covington and serving as the seat of the bishop of the said diocese.

Built in 1895, its exterior was inspired by the Notre Dame Cathedral, and its interiors were modeled from the Basilica of Saint-Denis – both in Paris, France. Construction stopped in 1915 and is still incomplete up to this date. Inside, visitors are awe-inspired by the view of the world’s largest handmade church stained glass window depicting the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. The church also contains murals made by Covington native Frank Duveneck and three historic pice organs
