The Old Exchange is located on the east side of Charleston’s historic downtown area, at East Bay and Broad Streets. It is one of the most historic buildings in the city. It was built by the south Carolina government and was used as a was used during the 18th century for a variety of civic functions, including as a custom house, public market, public meeting place, and jail. It served as a prisoner of war detention facility of the British forces during the American Revolution. The site is now a museum maintained by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In 1778, the Exchange housed the South Carolina convention which ratified the United States constitution.
When George Washington toured the South, many events were held in this building. He greeted the crowds from its balconies and a ball was held in its hall in honor of the first President of the United States.
During the American Civil War, the building served as a Confederate Post Office.
It is regarded as one of the best examples of Colonial Architecture in the United States.
