Patriot’s Point Naval and Maritime Museum is a one-of-a-kind institution located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, at the mouth of the Cooper River on the Charleston Harbor. The museum houses a fleet of National Historic Landmark ships, the Cold War Memorial and the only Vietnam Experience Exhibit in the United States. On its centerpiece is the USS Yorktown, a World War II ear aircraft carrier.
The USS Yorktown, name after the 1781 Battle of Yorktown, is one of 24 Essex-class carriers built during the Second World War for the United States Navy. From the time it was commissioned until 1945, the carrier mainly served the Pacific Theater of Operations. In 1975, the ship was towed from New Jersey to its current location in Charleston Harbor, where it since have been the main attraction of Patriot’s Point Museum.

The USS Yorktown is lovingly known as ‘The Fighting Lady’ because of the many battles it supported during the Second World War.
The aircraft carrier provided support for the Allied Forces’ naval and air force fleet during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, regarded as the largest naval battle in history and a crucial battle that lead to the end of the war in the Pacific.
Patriot’s Point also houses the only Medal of Honor Museum, an institution that celebrates the life of all US Medal of Honor awardees.
