American Visionary Art Museum

American Visionary Art Museum

The American Visionary Arts Museum was designated by Congress as America’s national museum for visionary arts to promote artists for their unique creative vision and intuitive approach. Its permanent exhibition includes more than 4000 pieces from self-taught visionary artists of varying backgrounds. AVAM’s collections and displays honor the “process and consciousness” of the artist, rather than being a “mere artifact.” The museum’s art pieces were all made and inspired by the artists’ passion within. Truly one of its kind, this museum celebrates creativity in all its form.

The American Visionary Art Museum is located in Baltimore, Maryland’s Federal Hill neighborhood at 800 Key Highway. The museum specializes in the preservation, conservation and exhibit of outsider and independent art.

Interesting Facts About the American Visionary Art Museum
  • The museum is a one-of-a-kind institution highlighting fresh thought, humor, and creative intuition. It exhibits the work of self-learned artists—including farmers, mathematicians, prison inmates, and people with mental illness.
  • The art on display include embroidery, graffiti, diorama, film, sculpture, and multimedia. The pieces are made from out-of-the-usual materials such as toothpicks, shard glass, up-cycled materials or a picture painted with mustard and ketchup.
  • Part of its community involvement and social responsibility, several of AVAM’s few full-time employees were hired directly from local homeless shelters.
