Located in the historic Cincinnati Union Terminal, this complex is a one-of-a-kind center for history learning in the region. The 1933 art-deco building itself is a landmark on its own. The center houses six organizations in its facility – namely the Cincinnati History Museum, Museum of Natural History and Science, Duke Energy Children’s Museum, Cincinnati History Library and Archives, the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center, and the Robert D. Lindner Family Omnimax Theater.
Interesting Facts About the Cincinnati Museum Center
The Cincinnati Union Terminal Company was built in 1927 to build a union station to replace five local stations used by seven railroads. The building was design in the Art Deco style prominent of the period.
The Museum Center’s rotunda murals measure 105 by 22 feet (32.0 m × 6.7 m); at the time they were created when created they were among the largest works of art in the United States.
In the early 1980s, the Cincinnati Historical Society and Cincinnati Museum of Natural History began to search for larger spaces. They eventually decided to join the History Museum in occupying space in Union Terminal. After this move, the museum center became the fourth-largest attraction in the area, behind the Cincinnati Reds, Kings Island, and the Cincinnati Zoo.
